Living in Australia
A good number of Global's staff come from overseas, including the people who work in our office. We understand that you need to work, but that you're also here to travel and experience all the good things that Australia has to offer.
Therefore, we'll make it a priority to place you in areas and organisations that fit in with your travel and work plans. Talk to us about casual and contract opportunities and finding work from state to state.
There are endless opportunities for healthcare professionals in Australia, but just getting here and finding a place to live can be daunting enough, so here are some tips about living and working in Australia :
When you arrive
- You can book an appointment with the Tax Office either by phone or online. This cuts down on waiting time when applying for your Tax File Number.
- You will need a Tax File Number in order to work in Australia . It takes approximately 4 weeks to be processed, though you will be given a receipt that allows you to work until your TFN is processed.
- Your current mobile handset can be used in Australia. It is possible to buy a prepaid SIM card for approximately $30 - but you will need to obtain an "unblocking" code from your overseas provider before your handset will work (if its an older model).
- All real estate outlets require references in order for you to rent here. It's a good idea to bring written references from previous landlords and/or contact details. (Furnished apartments are rare, so be prepared for additional expenses).
- Public transport in Australia is excellent. In Sydney the public transport info line is 131500 and representatives can tell you how to get from your door to your destination and the approximate time you will need to set aside.
